Noli Me Tangere The Moral Untouchability of Humanitarianism

unique research object. First, its manifestations are so diverse and indeed contradictory that its purpose seems nearly impossible to apprehend. Ranging from programs for assisting Central Asians in refugee camps to Seattle street demonstrations against globalization policies, from the struggle against famine in Africa to the defense of the national social protection system in France, from nongovernmental organizations decrying armed intervention to military operations justified in terms of assistance, the humanitarian world always exceeds what we can say about it. Second, it appears saturated with discourses that often turn out to have been authored by its own actors. Regardless of whether those humanitarian workers speak in the first person or proceed by way of their authorized commentators, whether they denounce world disorders or their own errors, they themselves are the ones to circumscribe the relevant questions and define what may legitimately be said about them. Finally—and this point follows in part from the two preceding ones—the world of humanitarianism tends to 2

Native jewelweed, but not other native species, displays postinvasion trait divergence
Invasive exotic plants reduce the diversity of native communities by displacing native species. According to the coexistence theory, native plants are able to coexist with invaders only when their fi tness is not signifi cantly smaller than that of the exotics or when they occupy a diff erent niche. It has therefore been hypothesized that the survival of some native species at invaded sites is ...
متن کاملDemonstration of pollinator-mediated competition between two native Impatiens species, Impatiens noli-tangere and I. textori (Balsaminaceae)
Plant-plant interspecific competition via pollinators occurs when the flowering seasons of two or more plant species overlap and the pollinator fauna is shared. Negative sexual interactions between species (reproductive interference) through improper heterospecific pollen transfer have recently been reported between native and invasive species demonstrating pollination-driven competition. We fo...
متن کاملCompetition among native and invasive Impatiens species: the roles of environmental factors, population density and life stage
Many invasive species are considered competitively superior to native species, with the strongest competition expected in species with similar niches and/or in closely related species. However, competition outcome is strongly context-dependent as competitive strength varies along environmental gradients, and life stages, and also depends on abundances. To explore the importance of these factors...
متن کاملSeedling traits, plasticity and local differentiation as strategies of invasive species of Impatiens in central Europe
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Invasiveness of some alien plants is associated with their traits, plastic responses to environmental conditions and interpopulation differentiation. To obtain insights into the role of these processes in contributing to variation in performance, we compared congeneric species of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) with different origin and invasion status that occur in central Europe...
متن کاملComparison of the Essential Oil Composition of Selected Impatiens Species and Its Antioxidant Activities.
The present paper describes the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from four Impatiens species, Impatiens glandulifera Royle, I. parviflora DC., I. balsamina L. and I. noli-tangere L. The GC and GC-MS methods resulted in identification of 226 volatile compounds comprising from 61.7%-88.2% of the total amount. The essential oils differed significantly in the...
